Deus Ex Machina in American Film

Just got back from Wilmington, NC where Dr. Natalie Trice of Dalton State College and I gave an awesometastic conference presentation to about five people at 9am Saturday morning…

This presentation, which I think we’ll continue working on and hope to perform again soon, deals with heroic characters from 1980s (or early 1990s) films who hear voices coming from technology (televisions, freeway signs, scoreboards) that tell them to do things. We’re focussing on films where following the voices’ directions leads to beneficial outcomes for the protagonist, despite the risks they are put through or put others through, and how this relates to our (the viewers) perception of films that we watch when we’re young.

… It’s sorta like a deus ex machina feedback cycle..
